Once upon a time while Steve and I were dating, I made a loaf of banana bread that Steve deemed unfavorable. Upon tasting the slightly dry loaf he declared, "You should leave the baking up to me." Granted, he inherited insane roll-making skills from his heritage, but that doesn't crown him king of all baking. And surely one slip-up doesn't merit removing the whole of my female baking prowess?
Sadly, that one slip-up has turned into several--every chocolate chip cookie attempt, in fact. Somewhere along the line I lost the basic "Every Girl Should Know How to Do" skill of baking chocolate chip cookies. It's nearly devastating since the only advice I remember from Dr. Laura's book The Proper Care and Feeding of Husbands a couple of years ago was that sometimes a man just needs some chocolate chip cookies. Obviously I can't provide what Dr. Laura identifies as a basic need of my husband. Every attempt...all different recipes...turns out weirdo flat wafers. Just ask Amy and Mark, or Adam and Rebecca.
Steve decided to take baking matters into his own hands, so for our FHE treat tonight he made these exquisite little numbers. Same recipe I used last week for my latest wafer thins. He sure showed me up. Look at that smug face.
For the record, I won a blue ribbon in 4-H for my snickerdoodles when I was 8. I've concluded I've got a Benjamin Button thing going on with my baking--it degrades over time.

One of the first things Pete told me when were engaged was, "You will need to get my mother's roll recipe." I have been working at making them well for years but I think Steve still makes better rolls than me . . . it can be intimidating marrying in a family where baking comes through their genes. It sure makes Thanksgiving nice though :)
I could go on and on about our childhood baking successes (that were generally botched by me in the frosting stage) and catastrophies (which I think got buried near my back fence), but I can say that I have been witness to MANY fabulous Kalina baking experiences.
But, if Jake did that, I would just probably go ahead and dub him honorary chocolate chip cookie man and have him bake them every Sunday. Congratulations, Steve, I'm impressed.
Oh, and I've found that mixing the ingredients for about 10 seconds longer than I usually do usually does the trick to transform them from flat holey blobs to lovely puffy cookies.
And now, I'm gonna go do me some baking.
What? Kalina isn't amazing at everything? I refuse to believe that. Let's see evidence of these supposed weird, flat cookies!
Just enjoy the fact that he now gets to make all the cookies in the house and you get to relax while he does :) I do have some awesome cookie recipes though if you ever want to give it another try. I can't really take credit for them cuz they are Mrs. Fields recipes but if you want them... :)
My brothers all baked cookies better than I did growing up. Humiliating.
I have yet to bake cookies that aren't flat as pancakes. Luckily, my hubby likes crunchy, overbaked cookies.
You know, if you were good at everything, it would be hopeless for the rest of us. At least there's one thing you don't excel at.
