Sickening

One afternoon while driving home, in the height of this spring's swine flu outbreak, I was listening to Mr. John Barry on the radio talk about his book The Great Influenza. My interest was peaked to the point where I actually checked the book out, and (over several weeks) read (most of) it (until I could no longer renew it and had to return it). It's a study of the Spanish Flu of 1918--which I learned was also a swine flu that originated in Oklahoma--its spread and influence, and the prominent figures of medicine at that time, battling the outbreak. It also provides a commentary on the evolution of the American medical education system. I was impressed with the detail and depth of the information presented, though at times I found it gruesome and slow. If anything, my appreciation for modern medicine has reached an all-time high. Read the book to find out what I mean.

Gone with the Wind

Rhett Butler made a guest appearance tonight to nibble on a chocolate chip cookie. Before he left he exclaimed, "With Steve as my witness, I'll never go hungry again!" When I mentioned he had a little chocolate on his face he shouted, "Frankly my dear, I don't give a D!" Actors, sheesh!

Willy Wonka Auditions

I told him to take it off before the Oompa Loompas showed up.

Steve's mom made this fun novelty for Charlotte. She's going to face some fierce competition for wearing rights at the reunion next week.

Cooks & Books

My brother-in-law Shawn is a chef and was featured in the news today! Check out his story here:

He also just published a cooking techniques book--
The First-timer's Cookbook
--he's been working on for the past few years. It's fabulous and is full of photos. He's a fantastic cook (as I can attest to first-hand) and has taught me some helpful tips and time-savers. To find out how to get a copy of the book, or find useful cooking information, visit his website and blog at http://www.firsttimerscookbook.com/

Return to Southfork

A couple of weekends ago Steve and I made the pilgrimage to the thriving metroplex surrounding the Ewing Oil headquarters. For those not familiar with 80's soaps, allow me to translate: we went to Dallas, Texas! The Erickson family graciously hosted us and allowed us to play markers and swing while there.

Steve made friends with the locals

and I tried blending in with the scenery.
Thanks Christina, Helaman, and Charlotte for letting us visit!

M'Lord

Remember how I said there were giant heads randomly placed around the city? Pardon me for excluding giant bodies as well. This gentleman, also known as Sam Houston, pops out at drivers in the middle of nowhere along the freeway. He's really quite charming.

.99/lb part II

This is the aftermath of Steve's produce binge.

He is solely resposible for all the carnage seen here, which now resides in our freezer.

M'Lady...

I had a meeting for work downtown today. And this is what happened upon my eyes as I was getting out of my car. What the....??? How could I have never seen this before? Maybe it's new? Yet another of the random giant heads that riddle the city of Houston. Really...there are a lot.

.99/lb

A short grocery story:

Steve and I both went to the grocery store after work yesterday. Different stores, different sales. I saw produce on sale for .99/lb, so I got 1 lb.

Steve saw produce on sale for .99/lb and got 16 lbs.

The man loves him some deals.

So now it's...millions of peaches...peaches for me...

Tour de P-Canyon

For the past few years, my family has picked up biking on Memorial Day. It's one of those family events that warrants a flight home to participate--it's that good. It's also one of the only times out of the year that any of us even gets on a bike, which is probably one of the reasons it's so fun...and funny. We have historically biked on Antelope Island but decided to mix it up this year and head down Provo Canyon--the operative word here being down, as opposed to the Island which is a more hilly terrain. Our ride was so gorgeous that I'll admit I was a little ticked off at myself for living minutes away from that canyon for 4 1/2 years and never once doing that trail before. So if you live in Provo, all I have to say is spend a little less time in the Malt Shoppe, and more time in the canyon!

Southwestern Sensation

Last September my family visited the Land of Enchantment, also known as New Mexico. We could hardly leave such a magical place without bargaining for some glamour of our own in the form of souvenirs.

Karlee, me, Kara, Mom, Tiffany

As much as I would love to say this is the one souvenir left out of the picture, or that I bought it after the picture was taken...unfortunately (or fortunately for Southwestern enthusiasts) this charming little denim bag has been mine for years, hence the 90's throwback look.

I know I've made some bad purchases in my day, but I can claim this one as a gift I received perhaps for one of my single-digit birthdays, long before I had use for a purse.

As it sits in my Things to Donate bag, along with other similar treasures, I can't help but ask myself, "What was I thinking with?!", "Why did I buy that in the first place?" or "Why have I been hanging onto that for so long?" It's always the same, whether they be items I originally purchased from the thrift store, are way out of style, or are relics representing antiquated years of my life (e.g. southwestern denim bag never used in public). I seem to have a knack for hanging onto the sickest clothes for the longest time--I could probably dedicate an entire blog to just that--so I thought someone might get a kick out of my latest donation delight.
